Machine Vision Applications for Detection and Characterization of Defects in Industrial Materials
Abstract: The industrial applications of lightweight material are increasing across many domains, which bring new challenges for efficient and reliable material inspection, damage detection, defect classification, and characterization. The advancements in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) techniques and Machine Vision (MV) algorithms offer the correct setting to tackle these challenges successfully. Non-destructive testing is a set of techniques used to identify any structural damage/hidden anomaly/surface or sub-surface defect in a material without any permanent damage or modification. Nowadays, Infrared thermography (IRT) is one of the widely used NDT techniques for non-destructive testing, quality inspection, and evaluation of materials. IRT attained prominence due to its whole-field, non-coupling, safe, swift, and quantitative inspection competencies to assess various structures despite their electrical and magnetic properties. Among the various IRT techniques, Aperiodic IRT (ApIRT) is in wide use at both industrial and research levels due to its ability to detect defects of different sizes, with different thermal characteristics placed at varying depths in the material with improved test resolution and sensitivity. Machine Vision has made remarkable progress in image processing applications in recent years. It has shown its ability to overcome most of the disadvantages of previous approaches in many applications. This talk highlights a machine vision algorithm based on aperiodic infrared thermography inspection intended to automatically detect, identify, and characterize the defects efficiently and accurately

The magnetization processes have been used for years to observe mechanical or microstructural properties in ferromagnetic steel. The usual techniques rely on standard specimens, time-consuming experimental campaigns, and rejection thresholds. These demanding methods give limited satisfaction, and controllers are looking for alternative solutions.
For physical reasons, every magnetization mechanism is characterized by its specific sensitivity to a given property to be evaluated. An ideal way to monitor this property is to develop an experimental situation where the most responsive magnetization mechanism can be isolated and easily monitored.
This presentation introduces the non-destructive testing methods based on the magnetization mechanisms. Then, the targeted properties, i.e., the specific information required by the industrials or non-destructive testing end-users, are described. It is followed by the magnetization mechanisms definition and their associated specific experimental situations and indicators. Finally, correlations are proposed, such as discussions and conclusions.
