Challenges for NDE for Power Sector

Power sector in India is at a critical juncture of history, wherein it cannot afford to either shift focus from maintaining the efficient & reliable operation of the existing fossil-fuel based power plants or afford to restrict entry and growth of renewables. While co-existing of both is the need of the hour and this will be so for quite some time, but the fluctuations in generation of renewables put immense challenges for fossil-fuel   based power plants in maintaining the overall supply of power as and when required. The flexible operation of power plants is the need of hour and it requires a lot of changes in control philosophy and maintenance & inspection practices for the critical power plant components. NDE plays a major role in identifying the components in stress and with defects for their timely replacement to maintain their reliability and availability. Hence to address the changes in power sector, there is need to have new/ advanced and reliable NDE tools/ solutions, which have potential to increase the coverage of inspection and availability of the components.

The session is planned to have presentations as well as Panel discussions covering following issues/ topics:

  • Overview of present NDE Methods being used during Manufacturing/ Fabrication/operation of power plants
  • Inspection challenges faced at different stages
  • Challenges of sector specific trained NDT manpower
  • New advances/ developments to address the NDE challenges and Road ahead
